cloud cover on this monday, november 26th. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you and thanks for joining us. 5:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. this morning the search for a new brief in san jose is about to hit second gear. the first of four community meetings gets under way today where city leaders hope to get feedback from local neighborhoods on what they want in a new chief. damian trujillo is live at the berryessa community center where the first of the meetings will be held tonight. damian, good morning. you're already hearing about some possible candidates for the job? >> reporter: yeah, we hear about a couple of people who might be interested in applying for the police chief position. i'm give you those names in just a bit. this meeting tonight is at 6:30. no one is denying that fixing this ship or righting this ship is going to be an easy task. the new chief will have to deal with lower morale and a dwindling budget, so it will be a tough task.
5:01 am
a few months ago chris moore announced he'd be retiring by january 31st. he leaves a department that is nowhere near the staffing levels he feels are needed to keep the city and his officers safe. the new chief will have to come in and play a political card game basically, working with the city manager and the mayor on the police budget. but he or she will also have to assure the rank and file that he has their backs. tonight's meeting at the berryessa community center will last an hour and a half. that's followed by a meeting on wednesday night at the camden community center and it ends on december 10th at the southside community center. now, in a recent debate on nbc bay area, both the police union and the mayor admit it will be hard to find a replacement, given all the turmoil. >> coming in, you're going to have a very difficult battle on trying to get this thing steered straight. >> that's a tough sell to bring in a qualified police chief to lead this major metropolis. what's going to be your sales
5:02 am
pitch? >> it's always tough to find a new police chief. >> reporter: now, two names that have surfaced as possible candidates are jerry dyer. he's the police chief in fresno. he retired last year only to be lierd back by city leaders. another name is a sacramento police chief rick braziel. he retires at the end of the year and also had to lay off 150 officers. whichever candidate applies, if both do, they'll have a tough task here in san jose. live at the berryessa community center, i'm damian trujillo. new this morning, a crash on 880 in san jose has sent at least one person to the hospital. several ambulances and fire trucks responded to the scene of the crash, which it appears involves a few cars. traffic was tied up southbound behind the crash at brokaw avenue all the way to montague expressway in san jose. so far the chp is not commenting on what caused it. investigators are trying to

find the person who hit and killed a woman on highway 101 in south san francisco. the woman was hit sunday night while walking northbound on the highway right near oyster point boulevard. police say she was hit by several other cars causing even more injuries. the accident shut down northbound 101 for hours. there's no car description at this time. it is not clear why the woman was walking on the highway in the first place. oakland police are looking for the gunman who killed two women sunday morning. that shooting happened around 6:00 near the corner of minna avnd brookdale avenue. oakland police have dealt with 115 homicides this year alone, five more than in all of 2011. a san jose man wanted for murder was nabbed during a black friday shopping trip. 18-year-old jacob hero is expected in court this week. he was spotted at walmart in morgan hill on friday by an off duty probation officer.
5:04 am
the officer called morgan hill police who surrounded the building and arrested him without any trouble. he is wanted for murder and attempted murder in san jose. a san francisco deputy accused of ronning a bank is expected to enter a plea today of the police say these surveillance pictures and fingerprints led them to deputy philip tong. he's accused of robbing a bank on balboa street on november 7th. he handed the teller a note demanding money and the teller handed over $1700 in cash. the seven-year veteran is on unpaid leave. he recently filed for bankruptcy. los altos police are showing off just how much a pair of burglars stole before they were caught. investigators got thousands of electronics and jewelry that were stuffed inside bags. police spotted the pair casing a los altos neighborhood. much of the property has been linked to its owners. the suspects had burglarized two

dozen homes across the bay area as far back as june. hockey fans beginning to wonder whether the sharks will have a season this year. games are now cancelled through december 14th. the lockout isn't just hurting the fan bus local businesses that are losing out on people who eat out before the game. one of the downtown businesses starting to feel that pinch. >> right now the night that the games would be scheduled, tuesdays or thursdays, our business is down at least 50%. it's a huge impact for us. a lot of our servers and bartenders aren't making the kind of money they're used to be making. we miss the fun that comes with hockey. >> contract negotiations broke off early last week. so far there are no new meetings scheduled. 5:06. right now thick layers of fog are smothering roadways across the bay area. bob redell is live at the bay bridge with a look at just how foggy the -- or how much fog is affecting the morning commute. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. it's not the densest we've seen
5:06 am
but it's certainly thick out there so this can certainly affect your commute in the north bay, san francisco, the upper peninsula and here in oakland. now, as a result the national weather service has issued dense fog advisories for five of the bay area bridges. you can see the bay bridge toll plaza right now is one that's getting socked in pretty good, especially as you go up the incline it's worse. so is the golden gate bridge, you can see in this live cam. you can't see the bridge's towers. the visibility there is being measured in car-lengths. the richmond-san rafael, benicia and san rafael are under advisories as well. according to our team of meteorologists, this could take some time to burn off. two reasons, there's not much wind and you've got the late autumn sun which is at such a low angle it's not producing much heat. hence the fog could linger for much if not all of the morning commute. if your commute involves an airplane this morning, it's not clear yet whether this will cause delays at oakland international or sfo, it's too early to tell.
5:07 am
the fog did cause problems for travelers yesterday at sfo with delays of up to an hour and a half. this is between 8:00 and 3:00 yesterday afternoon. >> the flight was cancelled -- not cancelled, but significantly delayed. and unfortunately we had a connecting flight. the only option we have now is to move to a flight tomorrow. >> reporter: i spoke this morning with sfo and oakland international, the people who are running their overnight desks there. they say they won't know until 6:30 or 7:00, depending on what the faa says, on whether or not there will be any delays this morning. both do have fog there but they're not socked in, so to speak. when you're out there on the roads, remember to slow down, use your low head beams. you don't want to have the high headlights because that will cause blindness up against the fog and make sure your brake lights work. those are key, especially out here when you have a lot of people in front of you.
5:08 am
reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." we want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's joining us right now. got a look at that fog. when is it expected to lift? >> i don't think it's going to be out of here entirely until potentially 1:00 p.m. over parts of bay area. you can see why. this is the bay bridge toll plaza itself and you can see we've got really thick pockets kind of drifting around, so this is not too far from where bob is actually situated and visibility is reduced even more so. up and down the peninsula is where it's the thickest. right now san mateo, you have areas where you have zero visibility so you want to take it easy. also the northern peninsula, san francisco, you have hundreds of feet of visibility. it goes all the way through novato. then we're looking okay from san jose to livermore. ten miles or better for now. we too will drop off as we get closer to sunrise. at 6:45 the fog will be at its most widespread and then we'll start to see clearing at 8:00 a.m. not everywhere. also we'll still have that fog creeping in from the delta, the
5:09 am
tule fog is really thick this morning. if you're headed to southern california, maybe you're trying to travel back home, you have family trying to do so, maybe sure that they're aware of the very dense fog out there. pea soup fog this morning. 67 degrees in livermore today, 66 in santa teresa and 66 degrees in san jose. so even with the limited sunshine coming in to start, we're still going to see a nice, sunny finish and temperatures will be warmer than any other day this week. as of late tuesday into wednesday the rain arrives and the showers are coming up from the south. 5:09. first, mike is all over your drive this morning. he knows it's going to be a rough one. >> correction. fog is all over your drive. i'm all over the fog all over your drive. we're looking to the san mateo bridge. we just saw half the flat section about ten minutes ago, now the fog has crept all the way over to the hayward side and the toll plaza very difficult to see. so you're going to lower the speeds. the bridge itself is moving smoothly, but, you know, you don't have much warning as far as visible cues so that's why we
5:10 am
encourage folks to lower those speeds. the map is not showing wet conditions but you might need windshield wipers because of that heavy mist. very, very tough to see. 280 and especially highway 1 along the coast. slick conditions where it's highlighted with orange where you have wet roadways and that continues all the way into and through san francisco. golden gate bridge and bay bridge as bob listed having warnings from chp. coming into the north bay we also have very dense fog. tough to see over that richmond-san rafael bridge. visibility is an issue as well as slicker conditions. and even to the north bay, especially through the north bay, i should say, heading over towards vacaville, very, very dense patches of fog. if you're heading toward the central valley, keep that in mind. the tule fog will be an issue and allow a lot of extra time. if it gets extra bad, pull over and take a break. >> watch how you're driving out

there. thank you very much, mike. it's 5:11. san jose has a little more holiday spirit this morning. we've got a live look at downtown. at least it's clear there. it's dark now but christmas in the park full swing. >> 3, 2, 1. light it up! >> and there is goes. yes, the countdown was on. the tree was lit on friday and there to make sure everything went smoothly, our own marla tellez. kristi yamaguchi was out there as well. she emceed the event. christmas in the park is now open but it closes on january 1st. always a nice event out there. >> yeah, we didn't get a shot of santa, though. our santa was pretty good. >> the santa. >> yes, the santa. 5:12. coming up, cyber monday seems like a great time to log on and shop but watch out at work. we'll tell you how many employers are giving workers the

welcome back. it's 5:14. thanksgiving may be over, but that's not stopping people from stuffing themselves with deals. according to the national retail federation, more than half of all workers will be shopping online during cyber monday. most web outlets are offering special promotions, discounts and free shopping only for today. now, this may all seem tempting, but keep in time career builder reports a quarter of employers have actually fired workers for using the internet on non-work related activity. >> scott mcgrew joins us now.
5:15 am
scott, cyber monday is really an old-fashioned term now. >> it really is. it dates back to the early 2000s. so the first day back to work after black friday became the biggest day of online shopping. these days, of course, you can buy something on your phone while waiting for a bus. that said, as you point out or as marla pointed out, half of all workers are expected to shop on the job today. so here's another interesting statistic for you. a blogger points out people are using their ipads to shop like never before. when it comes to tablets, ipads account for 80% of all online shopping. one of the most popular things to buy is the ipad. the bottom line here is this holiday, we are using our ipads to buy people ipads. wall street keeping an eye on the numbers as well. let's turn to kayla at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, kayla. >> reporter: good morning, guys. we do have futures that are
5:16 am
slightly lower after the markets come off their best week since early june. much of that optimism was over the strength of retail sales and black friday, but investors will be keeping an eye on the geopolitical tensions in the middle east and ongoing fiscal cliff talks in washington. we get economic reports this week on durable goods, consumer confidence and new and pending home sales. the dow jumping 172 points to 13,009. the nasdaq up to 2966. that black friday rally not looking like it's sustained just yet. back to you. some of the cyber monday deals we're looking at, particularly amazon, marla and laura, half off some of those really big televisions. we talked about ipads. television the other one really that is selling well this holiday season. >> good to know. >> i'll get my wall ready for it. hope you pick my name. take a look at the fog out there this morning. yeah, we're going to have a lot of low visibility. christina really tracking it all for us this morning. and you say it's going to stick
5:17 am
around for some time? >> yeah, it certainly is. this is the kind of fog that takes hours to burn off. just like yesterday, if you were up before about 10:00 a.m., likely you saw that fog. this morning we do have some deep pockets swirling around. san mateo, you just saw from that live picture of the san mateo bridge looking rather clear compared to the zero visibility that our map is reporting. but i can tell you fog does not stay stationary, it moves around. livermore and san jose, we're still at ten miles or better, but once you hit the highway and make your way up the peninsula in particular, you're going to run out of that visibility so give yourself extra time this morning, travel cautiously. it's always a good idea to leave a good space cushion between you and the car ahead of you. it's a good idea to follow those lights ahead of you because typically that's a good way to get to where you're going, follow a local. 8:00 a.m. and you can see here still mostly cloudy. looks like that cloud cover is going to continue to drift in from the central valley as we head throughout the day today, so the thickest fog, the fastest clearing will be down in san
